Find us at MASTS!
Updated: Oct 28
If you're attending this year's MASTS (Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland) is having their Annual Science Meeting (ASM) from the 10th-12th of November, you might run into some of our team.
The MASTS ASM brings together researchers from across marine science to share knowledge and create new connections, and this year some of our PhD students are on the programme!
Michael will be giving a talk, and Tamara will be leading a workshop. I asked them both to tell me a little bit about the research they are presenting, or in Tamara's case, conducting, at this year's MASTS ASM.
Here is what they said:
Michael - A speed talk on his research on multiple stressors

I am presenting on the effects of fertilisers and microplastic pollution on benthic faunal communities in a speed talk in the MASTS multiple stressors session. I will briefly talk about changes in abundance, biomass, and diversity in intertidal faunal communities from the Tay River estuary and consequences for nutrient dynamics. I'm hoping to find folks who are interested in the functional consequences of these stressors in the benthos. More broadly I am excited to hear what other research is going on in Scotland and get feedback from the MASTS community.
Michael will be presenting during the multiple stressors session from 11:30-13:30 on Tuesday the 10th of November.

Tamara - A workshop to build a framework to assess MPA effectiveness

I am leading a workshop which brings together marine scientists, conservation practitioners, and marine managers to collaboratively develop a practical framework of indicators for assessing the effectiveness of Marine Protected Area (MPA) management in Scotland. The resulting expert-informed framework will include a set of ecological, social, governance, and management indicators, alongside recommendations for how these can be measured and brought together to assess overall effectiveness. MASTS is the perfect setting for this workshop, as there is a natural overlap between our expert group and the wider MASTS community. Hosting the workshop at MASTS keeps accessibility high and costs low!
Tamara will be hosting her workshop, 'Finalising a framework of indicators for Marine Protected Area (MPA) effectiveness' from 10:00-13:00 in Conference room 1 on Thursday the 12th of November. The workshop is invite only.

More from us at MASTS
Tamara and Michael won't be the only Hope Laboratory faces to be found at this year's MASTS ASM.
Jackson (whose work this summer with Dr. Hope, while unrelated to what he is bringing to MASTS, can be found here) is presenting a poster on the morning of the 10th of November, and Asif is giving a speed talk on his acoustics work in the Marine Mammal Special Session in the afternoon.

We will be posting a follow-up blog about our experiences at the ASM, so stay tuned!
