For the team here at the Hope Laboratory, July brought: travel, new skills, and travelling to learn new skills.

Field Trip!

Cathi and Lauren went down to Boston Lincolnshire and Hull to collect soil samples from the saltmarsh, building on a project originally commissioned by Natural England to observe carbon stocks in mudflat habitats. The project has been expanded to observe carbon stability in saltmarsh–mudflat ecotones, the transitional areas between the plant communities growing in these two habitats.

They collected samples, and some fun photos!

Advanced Geospatial Summer School

Dr. Hope, our group lead, went down to the University of Southampton for the Geospatial Summer School to learn new skills and platforms for collecting and analysing geospatial data. She was particularly excited about learning how to integrate machine learning models into geospatial tools, which she hopes to apply to her current project.

Coming up…

Next month we’ll have more field work highlights and some project updates, stay tuned!
